About Moga

The city of Moga lies in the Moga district which is in the Punjab state. In the year 1995, November 24 Moga became the 17th district of Punjab state. Earlier, Moga was a sub-division of the district Faridkot. The town of Moga is positioned on the (Ferozpur-Ludhiana road) NH-95.  
Moga is extremely popular for being the abode to a majority of NRI inhabitants who have now been settled in Canada, USA and UK. Moga is also the birth place of Lala Lajpat Rai who was a legendary freedom fighter of India.

Moga produces the maximum quantity of rice and wheat in the enitre Punjab. There is also a Nestle plant which is located on the west border of the Moga which follows the international standards.

History of Moga

The Moga city was established by Moga Singh Gill and the city is also named after him. Moga Gill was the forefather of “Gill Community”. Thereafter the city was governed by his 2 sons named- Jagdeep Singh Gill and Khushpreet Singh Gill. They divided the Moga city into 2 parts.
 

Geography of Moga

Moga is spread over an area of 2230 square kilometer. It is geographically located at 30.8° in north and 75.17° in the east. The district of Moga is enclosed by the Jalandhar district on its north and on the south it is bounded by the Sangrur. Conversely, on the west Moga is surrounded by Feorzpur and Faridkot, while on the east it is enclosed by the Ludhiana district.

Moga Tourism

Moga is mainly popular for its beautiful gurudwaras and temples. The city is flocked by a plethora of visitors throughout the year. Among the various temples in Moga the notable ones are Sanatam Dharam and Geeta Bhawan. Geeta Bhawan is situated close to Kashmir Park. This temple attracts the tourists with its gorgeous mosaic works. Sanatam Dharam is a holy place for the locals and well as pilgrims from other cities as well.

Apart from these the other well-known gurudwaras of Moga are Chand Nawan and Daroli Bhai which are positioned at the Moga II block and the Lopon situated in the Nihal Singh Wala block.

Shahidi Park, Kashmir Park and the Nehru Park are the well-known parks of Moga.  The evening time is the most recommended time for the tourists and locals to visit these parks.

Culture of Moga

The main religion of Moga district is Sikhism. Among the various districts of Punjab, Moga has the maximum population of Sikhs residing in this district. Punjabi language is mostly used in Moga. Apart from the language the Punjabi literature, music, Punjabi cuisines, traditions, Punjabi poetry and architecture etc. also represent the true culture of Moga.

The main festivals that are celebrated here are- Teej, Baisakhi and Kanak Katai. In Moga, Lohri is celebrated with great joy during the spring season.

The different forms of dances that are performed here are- Giddha, Bhangra, Gatka, Loddi and Dandiya. Punjabi music and Qawali is also very popular here and is recognized globally.

The main craft of the rural areas of Moga is pottery and basketry. Apart from these- weaving, metal work, embroidery and wood works are also very famous here.
